The Guangxiao Lv Temple was built in the Yixi period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. It was originally named Wanshou Temple. Later, because Emperor Gaozong Zhao Gou of the Southern Song Dynasty ordered the temple to hold religious ceremonies to comfort the souls of Emperors Huizong and Qinzong, it was renamed ‘Baoen Guangxiao Temple’ by imperial decree. During the Qianlong period, it changed from Chan Buddhism to Vinaya Buddhism. It is a rare Buddhist Vinaya sect temple in China. The temple is large in scale and majestic in momentum. In its prosperous period, it could accommodate more than a thousand resident monks. In the 1930s, the Guangxiao Lv Temple established a Buddhist research society. Many famous monks who now spread Buddhist teachings overseas once studied at the Guangxiao Lv Temple. The Guangxiao Temple houses many precious cultural relics. The main ones that are well-preserved now are: several pages of palm-leaf scriptures, one volume of the Qianlong edition of ‘Longzang’, the old rubbings of ‘Rutie’ in two volumes, 12 album pages of ‘Portraits of Wise Empresses and Imperial Concubines in Successive Dynasties’ by Wang Zhenpeng, one long scroll of cursive calligraphy by Zhu Yunming, one volume of ‘Heart Sutra’ handwritten by Dong Qichang, one handscroll of ‘Fengle Pavilion Inscription’, one rubbing of ‘Diamond Sutra’, ten album pages of flower-and-bird paintings by Zhu Da, as well as Avalokitesvara statues, arhat statues, prayer beads, and hand beads of various materials.
