Ancient Taoye Ferry

Taoye Ferry, an ancient well-known boat departure point in Nanjing, is located at the confluence of Qingxi and Qinhuai River. It is said to be named after the Eastern Jin Dynasty’s great calligrapher Wang Xianzhi, who greeted his beloved concubine Taoye here.
In ancient times, the Qinhuai River was much wider, and ships often capsized due to wind and waves. To comfort his beloved Taoye, Wang Xianzhi gifted her a song titled ‘Taoye Song’: ‘Taoye again Taoye, crossing the river without oars, just cross without hardship, I will be waiting for you.’ After learning this song, Taoye no longer felt scared when crossing the river. In return for Wang Xianzhi’s deep affection, she also gave him a poem: ‘Taoye reflects the red flowers, graceful without wind. Spring flowers show what, only the gentleman picks me alone.’ Since then, Taoye Ferry has become a symbol of love in the hearts of the people of Nanjing.
