Anding Academy is one of the ancient academies in Jiangsu Province. It was established in the second year of the Baoqing era of the Southern Song Dynasty (1226) by Chen Gai, the prefect, at the former site of Hu Yuan’s lectures during the Song Dynasty. The academy has undergone many changes, successively becoming Taizhou School, Taizhou Middle School, Private Huaidong School, Jiangsu Provincial Temporary High School, and Private Shimin Middle School.
The academy enjoys a great reputation in Chinese history. Hu Yuan, a great Confucian of the Song Dynasty, once left the educational philosophy here: ‘The governance of the world lies in talent, and the cultivation of talent lies in education.’ Wang Gen of the Ming Dynasty once called out here: ‘The daily life of the people is in order, which is also the order of the sages,’ and founded the ‘Taizhou School’ that shines in the history of philosophy. In modern times, many academicians of science have emerged from here.

The ancient buildings within the academy, such as the Butterfly Hall (named for its butterfly-like shape) and Hu Gong’s Temple, are well preserved. There is also a more than 900-year-old ancient ginkgo tree in the courtyard, which is lush and leafy, and is said to have been planted by Hu Yuan. The opening hours and specific business status are subject to the daily opening conditions.
