On January 16, 2007, the foundation stone of the new Anhui Provincial Museum was laid. The new museum has a building area of 41,000 square meters and an exhibition area of 10,000 square meters. The architectural style reflects the unique Huizhou architecture style of five sides connected and four waters returning to the hall. It was completed and opened on September 29, 2011. It launches one basic exhibition – ‘Exhibition of Anhui Civilization History’, and four special thematic exhibitions – ‘Huizhou Ancient Architecture’, ‘Xin’an School of Painting’, ‘Anhui Four Treasures of the Study’ and ‘Treasures from Jianghuai’. The ‘Huizhou Ancient Architecture’ exhibits exquisite building components. A whole Huizhou ancient residence has also been impressively moved in and displayed as it is. The ‘Anhui Four Treasures of the Study’ exhibits special products of ancient Huizhou such as rice paper, Hui ink, Xuanbi brush, and She inkstone. The ‘Xin’an School of Painting’ is an exhibition hall for looking at calligraphy and painting works. The golden and exquisitely carved cultural relics exhibited in ‘Treasures from Jianghuai’ may be more favored by ordinary tourists. Even if one doesn’t understand the historical value, one can still appreciate them a bit. The two most precious treasures in the museum, the inlaid gold-rimmed agate bowl of the Southern Song Dynasty and the carved lacquer box with cloud patterns made by Zhang Cheng in the Yuan Dynasty, are both here and are quite magnificent. To the northeast of the new hall is the Anhui Geological Museum, which can be visited together with the new hall. The museum uses high-tech multimedia to interact with tourists. The exhibited rock specimens and paleontological fossils are shocking.
Opening hours: Open from Tuesday to Sunday all year round from 09:00 to 17:00; closed all day on Monday all year round. It is open on holidays. If it falls on Monday during holidays, the closure will be postponed for one day.
