The Aurora Museum is a cultural endeavor by Chen Yongtai, the founder of the Aurora Group, as a way to give back to society. Located on the banks of the Huangpu River in the financial district of Lujiazui, Shanghai, the museum officially opened in October 2013. The museum spans six floors with a total area of 6,316 square meters.
The Aurora Museum integrates collection, research, exhibition, operation, and promotion, adhering to the concept of ‘protection, inheritance, and dedication’ to Chinese culture. It also collaborates with Peking University’s School of Archaeology and Museology to promote the study of ancient artifacts. The museum’s collection primarily features Buddhist statues, jade, pottery, blue and white porcelain, and stone carvings. A special research center for ancient artifacts has been established to analyze and study cultural relics from the perspective of ancient artifactology, revealing the rich connotations of historical relics to the audience from multiple angles and aspects.
The Aurora Museum carries the pulse of history, providing the public with a new venue for art appreciation, educational promotion, and leisure. It also stands as a cultural landmark for Shanghai facing the world. Designed by international architect Tadao Ando, the museum uses glass curtain walls to create a minimalist and clear geometric form. At night, it takes on the appearance of a deep, quiet, and restrained blue jewel box, standing out in the dazzling night view of Shanghai’s Huangpu River.
Opening hours are Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00; Friday from 10:00 to 21:00; closed all day on Monday; and open from 10:00 to 17:00 on Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, and National Day.
