Ba Cheng Old Street is located in the ancient town area of Ba Cheng, constructed during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty (1875-1908). It stretches 200 meters east to west and is narrow enough for only three people to walk side by side. The street is paved with granite slabs and was designated as a cultural relics protection unit by Kunshan Municipal People’s Government in 1997.
The old houses along the street are built by the river, facing the street and nestled against the water, with a row of windows along the river, white walls, and black tiles. The stone banks are mottled, and the river docks are orderly arranged. The market river (Yanglintang) has clear water, with boats passing by like shuttles, presenting a typical Jiangnan water town scene.
The pedestrian path of the old street (stone slab street) is quite narrow, with buildings on both sides of the street overhanging towards the center, allowing residents and shopkeepers to shake hands by reaching out of their windows. The stone slabs that pave the street have been worn smooth over time, and the long, narrow old street tells the story of its long history, yet its simple and elegant charm remains.
