Ba Jin’s Former Residence is located on Wu Kang Road in Xuhui District, where the iron gate under the shade of trees appears particularly low-key and inconspicuous. The renowned literary figure, Mr. Ba Jin, lived here with his family for over forty years, and it was here that he completed his literary works such as the novel ‘Reunion’, the essay collection ‘Endless Pouring Out of Feelings’, the translated work ‘Memories and Reflections’, and ‘Random Notes’. The residence consists of a three-story main building and two smaller auxiliary buildings, accompanied by a garden. The main building, constructed in 1923, once served as the Soviet Commercial Representative Office, and in 1955, Ba Jin and his family moved here to settle. Today, the living room, dining room, study, and other areas within the building have been restored according to Ba Jin’s arrangements while he was alive. The garden is filled with various plants, many of which were personally planted by Ba Jin in the past.
The first floor of the residence primarily serves as an exhibition hall, where visitors can view Ba Jin’s works and personal belongings, as well as the kitchen and balcony, which was the place where Ba Jin wrote in his later years. The second floor houses the bedrooms and study rooms; the bedrooms are clean and tidy, and the study rooms display many books collected by Ba Jin. Although visitors are not allowed to enter, they can see inside clearly from the doorway. The third floor is the Ba Jin Archives, which is not open to the public. After touring the building, one can walk around the garden, which, although not large, offers a pleasant environment and is a quiet spot amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. Adjacent to the garden is an information room where Ba Jin’s works are sold, and visitors can also get commemorative stamps.
Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:30 all year round; the residence is closed all day on Mondays, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.
Essential Tips: 1. Group reservations are accepted. 2. Photography is not allowed inside the residence. 3. Only the first and second floors and the garden are open to visitors.
