Bada Guan, also known as the Eight Great Passes, is a collective term for more than a dozen interlacing roads in the southern part of Qingdao city, most of which are named after famous passes in China. The area boasts a serene environment, with peach blossoms in spring, crape myrtles in summer, and ginkgo and maple trees lining the roads in autumn. It is also home to many villas in various international styles, making it a popular destination for photography.
Here, you can visit the European castle-style ‘Huashi Building’, climb to the top to overlook the sea, or admire the Japanese-style ‘Marshal’s Building’ where a founding marshal once lived, and the Danish-style ‘Princess Building’ known for its beautiful love story. These classic villas make you feel as if you are in a corner of Europe. Walking south from here leads to the beach, which is the fine-sand and clear-water Second Bathing Beach, an excellent place for swimming in summer. The beach and Bada Guan complement each other, forming the typical ‘red tiles, green trees, blue sea, and clear sky’ landscape of Qingdao, making it a must-visit place in the city. The name ‘Bada Guan’ originally referred to the eight roads named after famous passes in China (Shaoguan Road, Ningwu Pass Road, Zijing Pass Road, Wusheng Pass Road, Jiayuguan Road, Zhengyang Pass Road, Juyong Pass Road, Shanhaiguan Road), but later it became a general term, also including the later-added Hangu Pass Road, Linhuai Pass Road, as well as Rongcheng Road, Zhengyang Pass First Branch Road, Zhengyang Pass Second Branch Road, Zhengyang Pass Third Branch Road, and Yellow Sea Road, forming the neighborhood. The villa complex in Bada Guan now has more than 300 villas, mostly built by foreign and Chinese politicians and rich merchants in the early 20th century. Today, they have become units for recuperation, government institutions, and also private restaurants, beauty, and fitness shops. The Huashi Building is a typical architectural style here, and other well-known buildings include the Marshal’s Building, Princess Building, Bada Guan Small Auditorium, VIP Building, and Fishing Terrace. The streets of Bada Guan are planted with various types of trees, each forming a unique scene: peach blossoms on Shaoguan Road in spring, crape myrtles on Zhengyang Pass Road in summer, five-angled maples on Jiayuguan Road in autumn, and rows of cedar on Zijing Pass Road are evergreen all year round. There are also French plane trees on Shanhaiguan Road, ginkgo on Juyong Pass Road, begonias on Ningwu Pass Road, and dragon cypresses on Linhuai Pass Road. The area is open all year round, 24/7. Ticket sales time for Princess Building, Butterfly Building, and Spanish Style Pavilion, as well as online ticket exchange (pickup) time, has been adjusted to: 8:30–15:00, and entry is stopped at 16:30. Service facilities include restaurants located near the villa area with prominent signs.Bada Guan (Eight Great Passes)
