Bai Causeway, originally known as Bai Sha Causeway, connects the Broken Bridge at one end and Pinghu Qiuyue and Gushan at the other. There is a flat asphalt road in between. On both sides are orderly willows and peach trees. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of West Lake at a glance. It is an ideal place for a leisurely stroll. The famous verse by Bai Juyi, “Love the lake eastward, not enough, under the green willows Bai Sha Causeway,” refers to this very spot.
The best season and highlights for visiting usually start from the Broken Bridge on Beishan Road. Stroll and browse along the way. Pass Jin Dai Bridge to reach Pinghu Qiuyue. From there, one can continue to visit attractions such as the Xi Ling Seal Society and Zhejiang Museum (Gushan Branch). Bai Causeway is suitable for visiting in all seasons. But to appreciate the classic scenery of “one willow, one peach,” it is best to visit in spring, around March and April. It is also recommended to watch the panoramic view of Bai Causeway from the opposite Beishan Road and capture the peach blossoms and willow greens, which makes for beautiful photos.
For visiting Bai Causeway, walking is the main mode of transportation. Bicycles can also be rented for cycling as motor vehicles are prohibited. Bai Causeway is not as long as Su Causeway. With a total length of about 1 kilometer, most people can easily visit. Cycling along Bai Causeway is also a pleasant experience. Bicycles can be rented at public rental points, or from hotels or roadside rental shops.Cycling is not recommended during holidays when there are many tourists as one might have to constantly avoid crowds. During peak seasons, this place is often crowded. So if possible, consider visiting outside of the peak tourist times. Due to the low-growing willows and peach trees on the causeway, the shade provided is not very dense. So it is also not recommended to walk on Bai Causeway under the scorching sun. It is best to stroll leisurely on the causeway in the early morning or late afternoon, especially before dinner when the sky is about to darken but has not yet done so. Taking a rest on the lake’s benches when tired, and you will find this is a rare quiet moment of the day on Bai Causeway. The entire text is open all year round, with 24-hour access.
