Baiyun Temple is the site of the Shanghai Taoist Association and Taoist Culture Research Center. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Daoist Xu Zhicheng from Jiading built the Leizu Hall at Dongxing Bridge. In the eighth year of the Guangxu era (1882 AD), the Leizu Hall was relocated to its current location. Later, Xu Zhicheng obtained over 8,000 volumes of the Daoist scriptures, and the Leizu Hall was renamed to ‘Baiyun Temple on the Sea’.
Baiyun Temple is grand in scale and is considered the foremost Taoist temple in Shanghai. Some of the preserved buildings include the Lingxian Palace, Lingxiao Golden Hall, Laojun Hall, and Leizu Hall. The seven Ming Dynasty bronze statues that are still present are not seen in other Taoist temples across the country. The treasure of Baiyun Temple, the Ming edition of the Daoist scriptures, has been moved to the Shanghai Library for preservation. The temple is open all year round from 08:00 to 16:30. On the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, the opening hours are from 6:00 to 16:30. The specific business status is subject to the day’s opening conditions.Baiyun Temple
