Banger Mansion: A Historical Residence in Nantong

Banger Mansion is located on Xiatang Street, which is the former residence of Feng Guifen, a modern political commentator. The mansion faces north, with its door facing Xujiang River, featuring a structure of residence in the front and garden in the back, embodying the typical architectural style of Jiangnan residences and gardens from the early Qing Dynasty. Feng Guifen was ranked second in the imperial examination in the 20th year of the Daoguang era (1840), hence the locals referred to his residence as ‘Banger Mansion’.

Banger Mansion, with a structure of residence in the front and garden in the back, covers an area of nearly ten acres and is a quintessential example of Qing Dynasty garden architecture. The ‘Three Carvings of Jiangnan’ (brick carving, wood carving, and stone carving) are its main features. The garden part, centered around a pond, is adorned with pavilions, verandas, corridors, arbors, bridges, and yellow stone rockeries, scattered in a way that creates a picturesque and poetic scene, with green trees providing a contrasting backdrop.
