Beijing East Road was initially constructed in 1849 and was completed by 1876. Originally named Consulate Road due to the presence of the British Consulate at its eastern end, it was commonly referred to as Houda Road. In 1865, it was officially renamed Beijing Road, and in 1945, it became known as Beijing East Road. The eastern section of Beijing East Road is home to many foreign firms and banks, such as the Zhong Shi Bank at number 130, the Zhejiang Industrial Bank at number 230, the Siming Bank from numbers 232 to 240, the China Reclamation Bank from numbers 239 to 255, the Zhongyi Trust and Shareholding Company at number 270, the Salt Industry Bank at number 280, and the Guohua Bank at number 342.
The middle and western sections are predominantly hardware, building materials, and electromechanical stores. Today, many historical buildings remain. The road is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.Beijing East Road
