The Button Museum, originally a residence of a wealthy family, is located in Xue Mansion. Constructed in 1927, this mansion is situated along the street and by the river, featuring two depths. Compared to traditional architecture, Xue Mansion is compact, structurally simple, and has bright halls, representing the transition from Jiangnan traditional dwellings to modern architecture.
The Button Museum consists of six exhibition halls. On the ground floor, there is an ancient button exhibition area, a shell button production process exhibition area, and a Chinese knot display area. These showcase a series of ancient Chinese hooks, my generation’s buttons, and various Chinese knots, reflecting the development of Chinese buttons from non-existence to existence, from complexity to simplicity, and from refinement to coarseness.

On the upper floor, there are modern and contemporary button exhibition areas, as well as a button application area. These display the leapfrog development of buttons from the Song Dynasty to the Ming and Qing Dynasties and exhibit many rare shells from our daily lives. Notably, the distinctive ‘pan flower buttons’ seen on cheongsams are demonstrated live by staff, satisfying visitors’ curiosity. The museum is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.

A must-see tip: Inside the Xitang Button Museum, traditional buttons (pan buttons) made into crafts are also available for purchase, allowing tourists to choose according to their preferences.
