Cadillac·Shanghai Concert Hall has witnessed historical changes and urban development since its completion in 1930. Countless music masters have graced the stage to bring artistic feasts. Every brick, every pillar, every carving, and every oil painting in this building is a story. Let’s approach Shanghai Concert Hall. In more than 90 years of time flow, trace back the past and present of this building and appreciate the legendary story of this art palace. Shanghai Concert Hall was originally named Nanjing Grand Theatre. It was completed in 1930 and designed by Chinese overseas architects Fan Wenzhao and Zhao Shen. It opened on March 26 of that year. It was the first theater in Shanghai to show foreign movies and premiered the American musical film ‘Broadway’. At the same time, due to its European Baroque architectural style, it is known as ‘Shanghai’s Paris Opera House’. In 1950, Shanghai Concert Hall was renamed Beijing Cinema. In 1959, it was renamed Shanghai Concert Hall again and remains so to this day. As a national professional music performance venue, coupled with its distinctive European classical architectural style, in 1989, it was listed as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit – outstanding modern architecture by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. It is a historical professional music performance venue in Shanghai and also one of the landmarks that can reflect the Shanghai-style cultural spirit of fusion of Chinese and Western cultures, coexistence of multiple elements, and keeping pace with the times. Shanghai Concert Hall is dedicated to chamber music and focuses on presenting many music types such as classical, modern, jazz, pop, and folk music. It holds more than 500 concerts and hundreds of public welfare education activities every year. Adhering to the artistic service concept of ‘Music for Everyone’, it receives more than 200,000 audiences annually. It is one of the cultural landmarks in Shanghai and is known as ‘the palace of classical music, the window of fashion music, and the home of popular music’ in the hearts of Shanghai citizens. Since 1960, many major music events such as the successive Shanghai Spring International Music Festival and China Shanghai International Arts Festival have been performed here. International and domestic music groups mostly perform here when they come to Shanghai. Shanghai Concert Hall has always been an important window for Shanghai audiences to understand and appreciate world orchestras and musicians. Since its opening, renowned art groups including the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Juilliard String Quartet, Hagen String Quartet, conductors Mariss Jansons, Christian Thielemann, violinists Isaac Stern, Salvatore Accardo, cellists Yo-Yo Ma, Mischa Maisky, Wang Jian, pianists Fou Ts’ong, Alicia de Larrocha, Murray Perahia, Maurizio Pollini, András Schiff, early music master Jordi Savall, accordionist Richard Galliano, and 10-time Grammy Award winner and singer Bobby McFerrin and other masters active in the international music scene have all given unforgettable wonderful performances on the stage of Shanghai Concert Hall.
To cooperate with urban renovation planning, starting from September 2002, the Shanghai Concert Hall underwent a translation and renovation project. The Shanghai Concert Hall, weighing up to 5,650 tons, was lifted by 3.38 meters during the translation process. It was translated from the current entrance of the Xizang Road elevated ramp to the southeast to its current location, covering a total distance of 66.46 meters, creating a miracle in the history of building translation in China. The translated concert hall reopened on October 1, 2004. On August 28, 2017, Cadillac honorably named the Shanghai Concert Hall. Opening hours: The opening hours are subject to the theater performances and event times.
