Caishi Jetty is one of the three renowned jetties along the Yangtze River, alongside Nanjing’s Yanzi Jetty and Yueyang’s Chengling Jetty. It is located approximately 5 kilometers southwest of Ma’anshan city, with the 131-meter-high Cuiluo Mountain extending into the western Yangtze River, and the crescent-shaped Suoxi River encircling the eastern side of the mountain. Caishi Jetty is famous for its association with the poet Li Bai, who is said to have drowned here while attempting to catch the moon in the river after becoming intoxicated.
Visitors, while seeking the traces of the poetic immortal, can also enjoy the beautiful garden landscapes and the magnificent views of the Yangtze River. The entrance to the scenic area is on the northeast side, and after crossing the Suoxi Bridge, there are numerous cultural small attractions at the entrance. Due to the considerable time required to thoroughly explore the area, it is advisable to head directly to the important southern attraction, Taibai Tower, and then visit these small attractions on the way out. Taibai Tower, built in memory of Li Bai, is the one reconstructed in the third year of the Guangxu period (1877 AD), with a three-story high pavilion at the front and a memorial hall at the back, connected by corridors on both sides.
Adjacent to Taibai Tower, the Li Bai Memorial Hall displays collections of poetry, calligraphy, and other cultural relics related to Li Bai. The Zhexian Garden to the northeast of Taibai Tower features a Jiangnan garden style, where many visitors rest in the pavilions after tiring from walking. To ascend Cuiluo Mountain, one can take the cable car from the Cuiluo Pavilion on the west side of Taibai Tower, directly to the Santai Pavilion at the summit, costing 30 yuan for a one-way trip. Since it only takes about 30 minutes to climb to the top, taking the cable car is not highly recommended.
You can first visit the ancient plank road along the river, which leads to the northern slope of Cuiluo Mountain, allowing for a northward ascent and a southward descent without retracing steps. Standing on the fifth floor of the Santai Pavilion, one can overlook the Yangtze River and farmlands to the west, and see Xiao Jiuhua Mountain to the north. The sunset on the Yangtze River is especially magnificent at dusk. When descending from the southern slope, do not miss Li Bai’s Tomb and Guangji Temple, with the Three Kingdoms period Chiwu Well in front of the temple being an ancient relic of Caishi Jetty. The ancient plank road is suspended on the cliff of Cuiluo Mountain, with the surging Yangtze River beneath, providing a sense of thrill.
Walking along the plank road, one can see the legendary large footprints left by the general Chang Yuchun when he attacked the area; the Lianbi Terrace (Li Bai’s Moon-catching Terrace); and the large natural cave of Caishi Jetty, Sanyuan Cave (Sanguan Cave). After visiting all the important attractions, not far from the entrance, there is the Lin Sanzhi Art Museum displaying calligraphy, and the Yan Garden displaying ancient inkstones and paintings, among other small attractions to visit.
