The name Caiyi Street comes from the numerous colorful clothing stores that once lined the street. ‘Record of Yangzhou Pleasure Boats’ once recorded Caiyi Street, calling it ‘the back layer of the transportation department. In the past, there was a clothing production bureau. Later, embroidery goods, theatrical costumes, second-hand clothing and other shops gathered in the street, hence the name.’ On the north side of Caiyi Street are a row of storefronts with Ming and Qing architectural styles, including noodle shops, Xiangsu Zhai, Baiwei Old Goose and other snack shops. On the south side of the old street, it appears very modern. Tea houses, internet cafes, restaurants and other storefronts add many fashionable elements to this old street. Surrounded by these modern-style buildings and decorations, a brick-carved gate tower immediately makes you feel the historical atmosphere. At No. 30 Caiyi Street, the Yang’s residence was once the residence of Yang Zimu, the salt transportation commissioner of Guangdong in the late Qing Dynasty. On Caiyi Street, it may be one of the relatively well-preserved old houses. The old houses of the Yang family are collectively referred to as ‘Yang’s residence’. As early as 1962, it was named a municipal-level protected unit. Nowadays, what can better show Yang Zimu’s prominent status is the gate tower of the residential entrance on Caiyi Street. Despite the hardships of years, the tall gate tower is still very intact. Looking up at the hollowed-out figures of begonias, you can still clearly see the delicate features of the ladies in the brick carvings. It is a masterpiece among the existing ones in Yangzhou. The opening hours are subject to the opening status on the day.
