Caohu is an important lake in ancient Xiangcheng District. It is also the area where people from Wu first entered Xiangcheng from the northern part of Taihu Lake. The east corner is Suzhou. It was originally called Chaohu Lake and later named Lihu Lake. In the third year of King Yuan of Zhou (473 BC), Fan Li, a doctor of Yue State, excavated it when attacking Wu. As recorded in ‘Yuhai Ji’, ‘Fan Li excavated this when attacking Wu, hence the name. It is called Caohu perhaps because it is used for water transportation.’ Caohu is 5.9 kilometers long and 1.5 kilometers wide on average. The lake basin is flat, rich in aquatic products, beautiful scenery, and full of vitality.
