The Changzhou Ancient Canal runs through the urban area from west to east and belongs to the Jiangnan Canal section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The area visited by tourists is mainly concentrated on the section from Canal No. 5 Creative Block to Dongpo Park. Tourists can walk to visit scenic spots such as Biji Alley in ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’. They can also take a boat to enjoy the scenery on both sides of the canal. Although some scenic spots along the Changzhou Ancient Canal are famous, many buildings are newly built in antique style. It is suitable for tourists interested in history and literature to recall the past. However, in terms of the original ancient charm, it may be lacking. Recommended scenic spots along the canal include: Canal No. 5 Creative Block, Ming City Wall, Biji Alley, Qingguo Alley, Tianning Temple, Hongmei Park, and Dongpo Park. You can combine walking and taking public transportation for a canal tour. Canal No. 5 Creative Block is transformed from Changzhou Fifth Textile Factory and is suitable for taking pictures. The Xiyingmen City Wall is the only remaining site of the Ming City Wall in Changzhou. The shops in Biji Alley used to produce combs overnight in ancient times. ‘The lights on Biji Bridge’ was once a beautiful scene in Changzhou. Qingguo Alley is a slightly old street alley. The halls of Tianning Temple are very magnificent. The Tianning Pagoda in the temple exhibits exquisite Buddhist treasures. Xu Zhimo once wrote ‘Hearing the Sound of Confession at Changzhou Tianning Temple’. Hongmei Park has a garden style. The Wenbi Tower in the park is the oldest existing building in Changzhou. The Yizhou Pavilion in Dongpo Park was where Su Dongpo moored his boat and landed. The original route of the Changzhou Ancient Canal water tour is Canal No. 5 Wharf – Biji Alley – Dongpo Park. You can get on and off the boat at Biji Alley on the way. Due to the construction of the subway in Changzhou now, the water tour has changed its route to Canal No. 5 Wharf – Biji Alley – Baidang River. It is a route that combines the industrial heritage style, historical sites, and the natural scenery of Baidang River. Open all year round, open all day.
