Historical records indicate that at the end of the Tang Dynasty, there were four city gates constructed in Jiangyin: Yanqing Gate, Qinming Gate, Tongjin Gate, and Chaozong Gate. Chaozong Gate, also known as the South Gate, has been the site of numerous intense battles throughout history. According to the Qing Dynasty’s ‘Jiangyin City Defense Chronicles,’ at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, Yan Yingyuan led the people of Jiangyin in an 81-day resistance against the Qing forces, with the South Gate being a primary defensive area. This valiant tale prominently displays the spirit of the people of Jiangyin, who are characterized by their unity and resilience, embodying their ‘united hearts and strong will.’ Later, the Qing Dynasty’s top scholar, Yao Wentian, inscribed ‘Land of Loyalty and Righteousness’ on Chaozong Gate. The gate is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.
