Liantang is located in Qingpu District, southwest of Shanghai. The old street in the ancient town area is on both sides of the central river in the town. Two flagstone roads face each other across the river. ‘Tall houses, narrow alleys, and opposite street buildings; small bridges, flowing water, and people’s homes’ form the unique landscape of Liantang. The dwellings on both sides of the street have high-ridged roofs and eaves. Overstreet buildings, river wharfs, promenades, secluded alleys, and deep houses give the ancient town an ancient, peaceful, and secluded style. More than 10 ancient bridges from the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties spanning the central river are hidden among the weeping willows. Each bridge is of different styles. Small wooden boats pass by gently from time to time. People walk on it and boats sail under it. The shadows of bridges, boats, houses, and people are rippling in the microwave. The architectural features of the old houses on both banks are strikingly contrasting: Shangtang Street mostly has continuous two-story buildings with storefronts facing the street. In the past, they were mostly shops. Behind the houses is the water. There are balconies on top for both stacking goods and enjoying the view and cooling off. Xiatang Street mostly has residential courtyards with round gable walls, white walls and black tiles. The front doors are along the river. The specific business hours and operating status are subject to the opening situation on that day.
