The Chenghuang Temple in Zhujiajiao is the temporary palace of the Chenghuang God in Qingpu. In 1763, Cheng Lvji from Huizhou planned to move it to its current location. In the middle of the temple are the front gate, stage, and main hall. On both sides are side halls. There is a small Quxi River nearby. Peach blossoms, plum blossoms, willows and poplars can be seen everywhere. The layout is elegant and there are 12 scenic spots. The top of the stage is composed of 160 brackets to form a circular dome, which is very rare. There are couplets embedded on the stone pillars on both sides: ‘Building this stage is long and lasting. Looking at the past events, are they dreams or real?’. The horizontal plaque is ‘Peaceful Elegant Ode’. In 1986, it was listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. The Chenghuang Temple faces west. There is a screen wall by the river at the main entrance. On both sides are the east and west gateways. In front are a pair of stone lions holding hydrangeas with soft lines. Entering the gate, there are two side halls on both sides. Further ahead is a stone pillar fish ridge and a stage with upturned eaves. In front of the stage is a temple square paved with stone slabs. Passing the temple square is the main hall. In the middle of the hall, there are statues of the Chenghuang God and his wife. Both of them have kind eyebrows and eyes and a look of peace. There are side halls on both sides of the main hall. In the old days, on the left were Yinqing Hall, Yuzhao Corridor, Yuexiang Room, and Zhaochun Terrace. On the right were Ninghe Study, Hejing Mountain House, Tan Ying Pavilion, Keyu Studio, Yixiu Pavilion, Hanqing Gazebo, etc. Ninghe Study was the gathering place for local literati at that time. In front of Tan Ying Pavilion is a lotus pond with rocks piled up by the pond. Beside Hanqing Gazebo is a small stream with a small stone bridge over it. There are hundreds of goldfish raised in the pond. Around it are planted hibiscus, willows, peach blossoms, plum blossoms, etc. These pavilions, terraces, rockeries and ponds were collectively known as the ‘twelve scenic spots of the Chenghuang Temple’ at that time. After restoration, it regains its former glory. The Chenghuang Temple is also the main activity place for Taoists in Zhujiajiao Town. Taoism respects Li Dan (Laozi) of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty as the leader and is called the Supreme Lord Laozi. There are four sects. In Zhujiajiao Town, the ‘Orthodox One’ sect is the most. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:30 to 16:30.
