Chiang Kai-shek’s Former Residence

Located within the Xikou Scenic Area, Chiang Kai-shek’s Former Residence is a historical site rich in architectural and humanistic interest, filled with traces of the life of Chiang Kai-shek and his family. For those interested in modern history and the life of Chiang Kai-shek, this place is a must-visit.

The main attractions of the scenic area are lined along the Wuling Road pedestrian street by the side of the Shanxi River, and it is sufficient to walk through and tour the whole area in half a day. Starting from the Wuling Gate, the nearby Wuling School, the Small Western-style House, and the Wenchang Pavilion are particularly worth visiting. Among them, the Wenchang Pavilion, built on Wuling Mountain, was once the villa of Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling, with paintings of Soong Mei-ling hanging inside.

Near the Jingtang Road, the Fenghao House was the place where Chiang Kai-shek married Mao Fumei and Jiang Jingguo married Jiang Fangliang. In the central courtyard, there is honeysuckle planted by Soong Mei-ling. The Yutai Salt Shop to the west of Fenghao House is the birthplace of Chiang Kai-shek, with the word ‘Qing Lu’ engraved on the door lintel.

The tomb of Chiang’s mother is located at the junction of the Chiang’s Former Residence Scenic Area and the Xuedou Mountain Scenic Area, included in the ticket for Chiang’s Former Residence. The cemetery consists of Chiang’s Mother’s Tomb Path and the Azalea Valley, with beautiful scenery. At the entrance, there is a tomb hut, which was once the residence of Chiang Kai-shek, with his handwritten couplets, and now it is a small exhibition room. The carvings along Chiang’s Mother’s Tomb Path are exquisite, and the view from Azalea Valley is broad, with lush forests and lawns that are refreshing to the mind.
