Canal transportation once brought glory to Huai’an in history. The China Canal Transportation Museum is located in the heart of the ancient city of ‘Old Huai’an’, which was the central state capital of northern Jiangsu in history, to the north of Zhenhuai Tower. The appearance of the museum imitates the architecture of the Jianghuai basin during the Ming and Qing dynasties, in a ‘product’ shape, with the central part as the main exhibition hall, the east building as the temporary exhibition hall, and the west as the multifunctional lecture hall.
The museum houses a history of canal transportation, displaying a large number of cultural relics, and employs many high-tech methods to make the museum visit lively and interesting. Visitors can interact with projections and enjoy 4D movies (movies cost 60 yuan). The序厅 of the museum features a 180-degree giant projection scroll and a sand table model. The History Hall covers the history and system of canal transportation. The Canal Hall explores the relationship between canal transportation and economy, characters, folklore, and cities, with its highlight being the high-tech interactive light and shadow. The canal waterways are projected onto the floor, and stepping on the buildings by the waterways will display related information. The Huai’an Hall is arranged to look like ancient Huai’an, with wooden-structured shops on both sides. The Vision Hall looks forward to the future. The Cultural Relics Hall displays cultural relics from the Neolithic Age Qinglianggang culture to the dynasties of Huai’an area. To the south of the museum, between Zhenhuai Tower, is the Governor Canal Transportation Department Courtyard Ruins Park (Governor Canal Transportation Office Ruins), where only the square foundation walls and some broken stone and pillar foundations remain from the official buildings of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Visiting the ruins is free and does not require a ticket for the China Canal Transportation Museum. Opening hours are all year round 08:30-17:00; National Day 08:30-21:00.
