The China Grand Canal Museum is located in the Gongchen Bridge area of Hangzhou City, with the ancient Gongchen Bridge to the west. The architectural style of the museum is generally positioned as ‘traditional yet not retro.’ The museum consists mainly of one floor, with partial second floors and some basement areas. The first floor is primarily the regular exhibition area of the museum, featuring four halls and one exhibition corridor, while the second floor mainly houses the library, audio-visual rooms, offices, and a semi-circular exhibition hall, among others.
The exhibition area of the China Grand Canal Museum is divided into five halls, including ‘Canals on Earth, China Grand Canal,’ ‘The Excavation and Evolution of the Canal,’ and ‘Canal Culture.’ Each hall displays and interprets the rich natural and cultural landscapes of the Grand Canal through images, artifacts, and models. The China Grand Canal Museum is not a simple, ordinary museum. On one hand, it is a large museum that reflects and presents the natural characteristics and cultural essence of the canal from all aspects and perspectives. On the other hand, it serves as a collection and research center for canal artifacts and documentary materials, as well as a center for the study and display of canal culture. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:30 all year round; closed all day on Mondays; and open from 09:00 to 16:30 on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day.
