Chitan Ancient Town, renowned for its rich history, is counted among the ten most famous ancient towns in Jingxian’s storied past. In the era when water transport was the lifeblood of commerce, Chitan played a pivotal role as a hub on the Qingyi River’s waterway. This strategic location brought a surge in population and a congregation of merchants, making it a well-known center in the neighboring counties of Jing, Nan, and Xuan.
Embraced by water on three sides, Chitan offers a serene and delightful environment, replete with captivating scenery and a vibrant folk culture. The town is a treasure trove of cultural and historical landmarks. Just a few miles away lies Matou Jiao, one of the ancient Jingchuan Eight Scenic Spots, featuring an inscription by the county magistrate Jiang Xun titled ‘Key to Jingchuan’, celebrated for its powerful strokes and fine engraving. The Qinxi Ancient Kiln Site, recognized for its historical significance, is under ‘Provincial Protection’. Looming over the Qinxi River is the majestic Qin Gao Mountain, also known as Qin Gao Terrace in ancient times, which hosts historical sites such as Yin Yu Rock and Dan Furnace Cave.
