Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve for Birds is located at the core of the low-lying alluvial island, Chongming Island’s eastern end. It covers an area of approximately 32,600 hectares, accounting for 7.8% of the total wetland area of Shanghai. The primary conservation targets are waterfowl and wetland ecosystems. Due to the sedimentation from the Yangtze River, a vast expanse of freshwater to brackish marshes, tidal channels, and intertidal mudflats has been formed.

The reserve boasts numerous fields, fish ponds, crab ponds, and reed ponds, with abundant wetland vegetation and rich benthic fauna. It serves as an ideal stopover and rest station for migratory birds in the Asia-Pacific region and is also an important wintering ground for these birds. It is one of the few places in the world where wild birds congregate and reside.

The reserve opens all year round from 09:00 to 15:30. The specific business status is subject to the daily opening conditions.
