Chongyuan Temple was originally built in the second year of the Tianjian era during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (AD 503), just a year after the construction of the Han Shan Temple, and has a history of 1504 years. Historically, Chongyuan Temple was a prosperous Buddhist site of the Zen school. The rebuilt Chongyuan Temple is located in the picturesque Yangcheng Lake Peninsula, with its most significant feature being the 33-meter-tall Guanyin statue in the Water Guanyin Courtyard, which embodies the unique charm of Chongyuan Temple as a Lotus Buddhaland and Guanyin’s place of practice.

The temple’s architecture includes the mountain gate, bell and drum towers, and the Mahavira Hall. The Mahavira Hall covers an area of 2100 square meters, making it one of the largest single structures in domestic temples. In front of the temple, on Guanyin Island, stands the largest indoor Guanyin statue in China, also 33 meters tall. From a distance on Yangcheng Lake, the majestic Mahavira Hall exudes grandeur, the eaves and corners of the Guanyin Pavilion are magnificent, and the temple’s progressive main buildings, along with the massive Guanyin statue, bronze leather drum, Island Guanyin wall, and bronze bells, recreate the splendor of the Chongyuan Temple of yesteryears.

The temple is open all year round from 07:30 to 16:30, and on the first and fifteenth of each month, it opens from 06:30 to 16:30. Clearing at 17:00.
