Chongyuan Temple

Chongyuan Temple was originally established in the second year of the Tianjian period during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty in the Southern and Northern Dynasties (503 AD), only a year after the construction of the famous Hanshan Temple. It has a history of 1504 years. Historically, Chongyuan Temple served as a prosperous Buddhist site of Zen Buddhism. The reconstructed Chongyuan Temple is now situated amidst the picturesque Yangcheng Lake Peninsula.

One of its most significant features is the 33-meter-tall statue of Guanyin within the Water Guanyin Courtyard, which epitomizes the unique style of Chongyuan Temple as a Lotus Buddhist Kingdom and Guanyin’s sacred site. The temple’s architecture includes the mountain gate, bell and drum towers, and the Mahavira Hall. The Mahavira Hall, with a construction area of 2100 square meters, is one of the largest single structures among Chinese temples.

In front of the temple, on Guanyin Island, stands the largest indoor Guanyin statue in China, also 33 meters tall. From a distance on Yangcheng Lake, the majestic Mahavira Hall exudes grandeur, the eaves and corners of the Guanyin Pavilion are majestic, and the layered main buildings of the temple, along with the massive Guanyin statue, bronze leather drum, island Guanyin wall, and bronze bells, recreate the splendor of the original Chongyuan Temple.

The temple is open all year round from 07:30 to 16:30, with special opening times on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month: 06:30 to 16:30. The temple is cleared at 17:00.
