In 1943, Chongqing served as the provisional capital during the Anti-Japanese War. Chiang Kai-shek, who personally presided over National Central University (the predecessor of Nanjing University), invited three renowned professors from the Chinese Department to join him for a New Year’s Eve dinner. The professors found themselves in a dilemma, conflicted about whether to attend or not, and whether to give Chiang Kai-shek the honor of their presence.
Fast forward to 1967, in Nanjing, the old capital, during the tumultuous ‘Cultural Revolution’. The same three professors were under scrutiny for this incident. Their memories varied, with each recalling differently whether they had been invited by Chiang Kai-shek and if they had attended his banquet.
