In the fifth year of Huichang in the Tang Dynasty (845 AD), in spring, Du Mu, a famous poet and the governor of Chizhou, encountered rain while taking a spring outing in Xinghua Village outside Xiushan Gate in the west of Guichi City. He wrote the poem ‘Qingming’ which has been passed down through the ages and is known to all women and children. ‘During the Qingming Festival, rain falls in succession.
Pedestrians on the road are filled with deep sorrow. Asking where there is a tavern, a shepherd boy points to Xinghua Village in the distance.’ In fact, not only Du Mu, but also Li Bai, Bai Juyi, Sima Guang, Wang Anshi, Li Qingzhao and others have left immortal poems here. From the 13th to 24th year of Emperor Kangxi (1674-1685 AD), Lang Sui, a native of Xinghua Village, spent 11 years compiling twelve volumes of ‘Annals of Xinghua Village’. The book records all aspects of Xinghua Village’s history, scenic spots, establishment, historical sites, poems and so on. It also describes in detail the twelve beautiful sceneries of ancient Xinghua Village: Spring Rise in Pingtian Lake, Sunset Glow at Santai, Lotus Breeze in Baipu, Misty Rain in Xixiang, Wheat Waves in Tea Fields, Lofty Clouds and Moonlit Pines in Qiyun, Zhaoming Academy, Iron Buddha Zen Forest, Red Maples in Sangzhe, Dawn Snow in Meizhou, Huanggong Tavern, and Fishing Songs in Duyu. ‘Annals of Xinghua Village’ is the only village annals selected into ‘Complete Library in Four Divisions’. Therefore, later generations call Xinghua Village ‘an excellent village at present’! It can be said that Xinghua Village became famous all over the world because of a poem and was remembered through the ages because of a book. At present, the open folk custom experience area is about 8 square kilometers, with scenic spots such as Tang Tea Village, Shili Bridge, Huanyuan Garden, Kuiyuan Garden, Qiyuan Garden, Bai Xing Garden, and water sightseeing.
