Dahongyan Scenic Area, along with the nearby Qingfeng Village and Liu Xiu Long, is collectively known as the ‘Danxia Wonders’. It is a more concentrated and spectacular Danxia landscape in the central part of Wuyi. The massive vermilion cliffs of Dahongyan and the caves of varying sizes and depths within the mountain are quite eye-catching. If you plan to climb mountains and enjoy the scenery in Wuyi on the weekend, Dahongyan is highly recommended.
The trails within the scenic area are circular, with only two steep sections of stairs, and the rest are relatively easy to walk, avoiding the need to retrace your steps. Visitors can either walk the entire way or take a sightseeing vehicle near the Tai Chi Pond at the entrance gate to the mountain entrance (10 yuan per person), and then walk clockwise for sightseeing. There is also a shorter trail for those who get off the sightseeing vehicle, which can be completed in about 20 minutes. At the place where the sightseeing vehicle drops off, there is a bamboo corridor. At the end of the bamboo corridor, there is a fork in the road. To the right is the steep steps of Tian Tang Ridge, which even the young may find breathless to climb. The elderly and weak can take the gentle slope to the left, which is much easier. At the top of Tian Tang Ridge, near the Ying Jia Pavilion, there is a large viewing platform. Standing here and looking into the distance, the distant mountain ranges form the shape of a lotus flower, with the central peak being the lotus core. The steep cliffs with caves of various sizes are clearly visible, which is a classic view of Dahongyan. Continuing forward, along the way are cave-like tunnels one after another. People have endowed these caves with many legends based on their characteristics. For example, the famous Reading Cave is a low-ceilinged cave with a large space inside. It is said that Emperor Liu Xiu of the Eastern Han Dynasty once read scriptures here when he was in distress. Now, there are many stone tables and chairs inside for people to rest. Adjacent to it is the Wukong Cave, which is quite interesting. Visitors can walk into the large cave and poke their heads out through the small holes in the rock wall to take photos and mementos, giving a sense of Sun Wukong being pressed under the Five Elements Mountain. After passing through the Fan Yin Cave, Guanyin Cave, and Shuangyan Cave (near the Shuangyan Temple, where you can enjoy distant views), and climbing a section of stairs, you will reach the Niu Bi Cave, which is also a higher place that visitors can reach, and then it’s all downhill from there. The Niu Bi Cave is divided into left and right caves. When you pass through the cave and look back, it indeed resembles the nose of an ox. On the way down, passing through the Qingfeng Cave, through the dense pine forest of Qing Song Ridge, and then down the steep steps behind the West Heaven Gate, which is comparable to Tian Tang Ridge, you can see the vermilion side of Dahongyan. In the subsequent tour, as you walk down the steps, the majestic red cliffs of Dahongyan accompany you all the way, and the scenery is very shocking. The aerial plank road at the Mo Er Rock (Danxia Gallery) offers a particularly good view of Dahongyan, and the large number of paired trees in the Mandarin Duck Forest behind add a touch of romance. At the foot of the mountain, the Liu Xian Lake reflects the cliffs of Dahongyan, adding a bit of spirit to the scene. If you come to Dahongyan in autumn, the large expanses of lavender, cosmos, and lilies at the foot of the mountain are in full bloom, and the photos taken are colorful. If you want to go to Qingfengzhai or Liuxiu Long, you can also transfer at Wangzhai and take the bus heading to Liucheng or Yuyuan. However, the scenery in these places is similar, and not as spectacular as Dahongyan. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:30 to 17:00.
