Dangkou was formerly known as Dingshe. According to legend, it is the hometown of Ding Lan, a filial son in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is named because it is located at the mouth of Ezongdang. The ancient town is located in Ehu Town, southeast of Wuxi. It is adjacent to the Hongshan Yue State tombs and the Tomb of Taibo in the west, and borders Suzhou and Changshu in the east. There are many historical relics here, including four provincial-level cultural relic protection units (13 sites in total), one municipal-level cultural relic protection unit, one controlled protection unit, and 50 historical buildings.
In 2004, it was announced as a famous historical and cultural town in Jiangsu Province. In 2008, it was identified as one of the five key protected historical and cultural blocks (famous towns) in Wuxi. In 2010, it was rated as a famous historical and cultural town in China. In 2014, it was rated as a national 4A-level scenic spot. The beautiful Ehu Lake has given birth to this famous historical town. Most of the residents in the town are surnamed Hua. Their ancestor Hua Zhengu was well-versed in various schools of thought and wrote and published ‘Lüde Collection’, which has been passed down from generation to generation within the clan. Therefore, the culture of filial piety prevails here. It is a place of rich resources, outstanding people, and rapid economic and social development, becoming the number one township for grain tribute in the south of the Yangtze River.
