A famous saying goes, “Yangzhou is splendid, with Daqiao leading the way. Willows green, three feet in the rain, cherries red, a flute’s sound; everywhere, orchids linger on the oars.” This is the historically renowned Daqiao in Yangzhou. The bridge, with its beautiful scenery, has attracted numerous literati and scholars who have discussed the world, exchanged poetry, and left behind many precious calligraphic works and touching stories. During the Kangxi period, Wang Yuyang composed a poem: “The Red Bridge flies across the water, a railing of one line, nine turns red; at noon, painted boats pass under the bridge, the scent of clothes and people too hurried.” This poem is well-known and even Emperor Qianlong praised the scenery of Daqiao in his own poetry. If one compares Slender West Lake to a classical beauty, it is Daqiao that lifts her veil; if one compares Slender West Lake to a long drama, it is Daqiao that draws back her curtain. Start from Daqiao to appreciate the beauty of “two banks of flowers and willows along the water, a road of pavilions and towers all the way to the mountain.”
