In Jiangdu District, there are two ancient towns, namely Beishaobo and Nandaqiao. Daqiao Town, located by the Yangtze River, still perfectly preserves an ancient flagstone street full of antique charm, quietly showing the prosperity that lasted for several dynasties to the world. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the flagstone street in Daqiao Town was built, running from east to west, about four Chinese li in length. The pavement of the ancient street is paved with nearly ten thousand granite flagstones nearly three feet long, one foot wide and nearly five inches thick. Underneath is a brick-structured sewage drainage channel. Although hundreds of years have passed, the road shape of the flagstone street is still clear, and the granite flagstones are still vividly winding away. Matching the flagstone street are row upon row of residences in the Ming and Qing styles, built on both sides of the street, each with its own characteristics. Among them are the southern Anhui characteristics of the Liu Family Courtyard, the Jiangnan style of the Shu Family’s ancient residence, and the combination of Chinese and Western styles of the ‘Huanggang Villa’ and other such exquisite buildings, adding a strong ancient charm to the ancient street. It is worth mentioning that the ancestral hall of Gu Tuhe, the second place in the imperial examination in the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, has a pair of large stone lions standing in front of the mansion, so it is called the ‘Lion Mansion’. There is a blue-bottomed and gold-engraved plaque inscribed with ‘Imperially Bestowed Second Place in the Imperial Examination’ by Kangxi hanging on the wooden archway behind the stone lions. Inside the ancestral hall hangs a plaque inscribed with ‘Zuntun Hall’ bestowed by Kangxi, making this ancient rural town shine brightly for several centuries. The specific business hours are subject to the opening status on the day.
