Datong Academy

Datong Academy is located at No. 563, West Shengli Road, Shaoxing, about a hundred meters west of the Ancient Yue Library. The full name is Datong Normal School. Originally known as the Imperial Examination Hall, it was later changed to Yu Cang during the Qing Dynasty. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, it served as the main base of activities for the famous revolutionary group, the Restoration Society, in Zhejiang. The academy originally had more than 50 rooms. The north-facing bungalow buildings cover an area of 3,098 square meters and a construction area of 1,754 square meters. The overall layout is divided into three sections. The first section is the entrance hall. In the center is the plaque of ‘Datong Academy’, inscribed by Mr. Zhao Puchu. The second section is the auditorium. It is now the exhibition room for the historical traces of the Restoration Society. The third section was officially opened to the public in 1982 and was designated as Xu She, showcasing the life and deeds of Xu Xilin. On the east side, the first section’s westernmost room was originally Qiu Jin’s workshop and the place where she was arrested.
