For ancient traditional architecture, in a city, since there is a drum tower, how can there be no bell tower? Otherwise, how can we talk about ‘morning bells and evening drums’? In Nanjing, Dazhongting is where the ancient capital’s bell tower used to be. It forms a corner with the drum tower. The bell tower was built under the leadership of the Jiangning administrative commissioner during the Guangxu period. There is also an exclusive pavilion supported by six iron pillars, with a double-eaved hexagonal pyramidal roof and a grey tubular tile roof. Inside hangs a huge bell from the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty, which is quite magnificent. When struck, the sound is loud and far-reaching. Nowadays, Dazhongting has been divided into a park. However, due to its small area, many people will misunderstand it as someone’s private garden and few people visit it. Fortunately, because of this, the atmosphere here is very quiet and fresh. It is a great place to daze in the midst of chaos.
