Dazhu Mountain Scenic Area is located in the southwestern coastal region of Huangdao District. Upon arrival, visitors can follow the mountain trails to enjoy the various peculiar peaks and strange rocks, and visit historical sites such as Shi Men Temple and ancient Buddhist grottoes. After a tiring walk, one can also taste the sweet Yuquan Spring water. If you visit in spring, the azalea flowers covering the mountains will surely feast your eyes. The main peak of Dazhu Mountain, Dazhai Ding, is 486 meters above sea level. The mountain is not very tall, and climbing it will not be too tiring. The scenic area is mainly divided into two major tourist areas: Shi Men Temple and Zhushan Xiugu. The usual route is to enter the scenic area from the Zhushan Xiugu entrance, viewing the landscapes such as Zhushan Xiugu, Dazhai Ding, Zhu Chao Cave, Dazhu Mountain Grottoes, Natural Giant Buddha, Tomb Pagoda Forest, and Shi Men Temple, and exiting from the Shi Men Temple entrance. Every spring is the tourist season for Dazhu Mountain. Before Qingming Festival, you can see cherry blossoms, apricot blossoms, and peach blossoms blooming in succession at the valley entrance; from mid-April to mid-May, the Zhushan Xiugu is a sea of wild azaleas, red across the ridges. From the summit, the view is very spectacular. However, be prepared for the large crowds of tourists who come specifically to appreciate the flowers. There are many peculiar peaks and strange rocks on Dazhu Mountain, full of spirit. Some of these huge rocks resemble a divine tortoise running to the moon, some look like immortals drying boots, and others are as lifelike as Zhong Kui, vividly portrayed. There are also many naturally piled-up stone caves on the mountain, such as Zhu Chao Cave and Chaoyang Cave. Climbing to the top of the mountain and looking into the distance, the green peaks are all in view. On a clear day, you can even see the Jiaonan urban area and the distant coastline. In the Shi Men Temple tourist area, there are many historical sites. Shi Men Temple, which was built during the Northern Qi Dynasty, is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site with a history of over 1500 years. The temple is named for its two towering stones that serve as gates, and the ancient charm of the temple buildings still remains. There are also Buddhist grottoes from the Sui and Tang Dynasties, a forest of pagodas of Shi Men Temple’s monks, and you can see the peculiar peak at the top of the mountain – the Natural Giant Buddha, whose Buddha image is very solemn.
