Dechou Road is one of the areas in Qingdao where old buildings and villas are densely concentrated. The former site of the Jiaozhou-Imperial German Court at No. 2 Dechou Road is quite representative, featuring red tiles, yellow walls, and coarsely chiseled original granite. The arched main gate faces east, with an exquisitely carved decoration on the lintel, which, aside from its decorative purpose, may also carry a profound meaning.
As you walk along the road, you can see the Lu Dian Apartment, a building with a strict yet varied style. The concave porch and the protruding walls on both sides create a strong contrast between light and shadow.
Across the street from Lu Dian Apartment, the former residence of the Governor’s pastor may not be eye-catching, but its luxury can be seen in the details, such as the combination of straight and curved lines at the top; the treatment of the wall imitating wooden structure; and the spacious corner balcony on the first floor.
Among these European-style apartments, there is an exception – the Shenggong Girls’ Middle School at No. 27 Dechou Road, designed by an American architect. Although it absorbs the style of European church middle schools, it still conveys the simplicity and ruggedness of American architecture.
