Deheyuan is a small courtyard in the Summer Palace. It is located inside the East Palace Gate. It was the place where Empress Dowager Cixi watched operas back then. The main buildings here are the grand theater, Yile Hall and Qingshan Hall. The three-story grand theater is the main building, more than 20 meters high. The three stages of the grand theater can be connected. In the past, many characters could ‘go up to heaven and down to earth’ during performances. There is a well at the bottom of the grand theater. During performances back then, water could be sprayed on the stage through mechanisms.
