Dinghai Ancient City is a millennia-old city with a long history and numerous historical sites, also known as a famous island cultural city in China. It has preserved historical blocks such as the Central Street, West Street, East Street, Chai Shui Alley, and Liu Fang Road from the Ming and Qing dynasties, scattered with many ancient historical sites, leaving the footprints of talented individuals and celebrities from various dynasties. Historically, it has always been a military stronghold, with historical relics from the anti-British war, anti-Japanese, and anti-Qing periods. Dinghai has been a gathering place for talents, with nearly a hundred notable figures such as Zhu Baoshan, Liu Hongsheng, and Dong Haoyun emerging throughout history.
Central and West Streets: These are the most famous old streets in Dinghai. The growth of Dinghai, this historical and cultural city, is etched into the fabric of these old streets. The streets are not wide, flanked by layers of old houses, with a row of century-old shops lined up on either side. The slightly curved old streets seem to stretch endlessly, like a young girl bending gracefully when she laughs uncontrollably, full of charm and allure. The stone-paved roads, trampled by the footprints of generations, remain as clear and fitting as ever.
Historical Commercial Streets: Dinghai’s West Street and Central Street were commercial streets during the late Qing Dynasty, with a street width of 4-5 meters, which was considered a real commercial avenue at that time. They feature two-story, wooden-structured fire walls, and the eaves gallery on the second floor was the place to overlook the bustling scenery of the market at that time.
Zu Yin Temple: Located on Changguo Road in Dinghai, it is known as the ‘First Ancient Zen Forest of Wengzhou’, covering an area of nearly ten thousand square meters. It was originally built in the fifth year of Tianfu during the Later Jin Dynasty and has been renovated several times to form a large Buddhist temple on Zhoushan Island today.
Late Qing Mansions: In areas such as Liu Fang Alley, Academy Alley, Chai Shui Alley, Dongguan Temple Alley, West Street, and Changguo Road in Dinghai, there are many uniquely shaped former residences, including those of Lan Li, Dong Haoyun, and Liu Hongsheng. The brackets, gates, halls, doors, and windows, and the ceiling wells here all have distinctive features.
