Discover the Hidden Treasures of Hubei: A Journey Through the Mysteries of the Land

In twenty days, I visited Hubei twice and was struck by the enchanting beauty of its landscapes. The magical scenery unfolded like a painting, with mountains, gorges, rivers, valleys, caves, waterfalls, stones, forests, cities, and food, offering a panoramic and comprehensively tempting experience. Especially by driving through Enshi and Yichang, the hidden treasures here are the pride of the province. Today’s travelogue is destined to be a major project, so let’s start with a set of beautiful images to slowly guide you into this charming scenery!

Have you been conquered by the beautiful scenes in the phone wallpapers? Haha, don’t worry, this beauty is just beginning. After nearly half a month of exploration, we visited a total of 11 scenic spots, including Enshi Tusi City, Enshi Grand Canyon, Suobuya Stone Forest, Enshi Daughter City, Jianshi Earth Heart Valley, Hefeng Pingshan Grand Canyon, Xuan’en Pengjia Village, Lichuan Tenglong Cave, Wufeng Chaibuyi Grand Canyon, Yichang Three Gorges People’s Home, and Jingzhou Guizhou Self-driving Campground. Only by driving can you comfortably complete such a compact and huge itinerary.

Next, let me take you through each stop, through the beautiful photos recorded by my friends and me, to embark on this journey through the enchanting Hubei, and share the highlights of the trip with you…

**The First Stop: Enshi Tusi City**
“A City to Read a Thousand Years”: Known as the “Little Forbidden City” of Hubei, the Tusi Royal City in Enshi is a symbolic project of the Tusi culture in the Tujia area and a typical ancient architectural complex with large scale and style, resembling the Tujia’s stilted buildings. It is called the “Little Forbidden City” of Hubei.

Here, not only is the historical origin of the Tujia people reflected, but also their ancient and simple customs are displayed. This is my third time visiting here, and the feeling is still shocking!

I like the sense of composition and artistry of the Tusi Royal City’s architecture. The designer’s exquisite ideas and the craftsmen’s almost perfect craftsmanship are fully demonstrated.

I have always tried to find new angles to show the Tusi City in my heart. Surprisingly, every time there are new discoveries and experiences! This is a great place for taking photos. If you wear gorgeous ethnic clothes, you will become a Tujia girl…

The “Jiu Jin Hall” is the core part of the entire Tusi City, composed of 333 pillars, 333 stone pillars, 330 doors, thousands of carved wooden windows, thousands of beams, and tens of thousands of oak combinations. It is a rare pure mortise and tenon wooden structure in the country, with pavilions, towers, corners, layers of eaves, and a well-arranged layout, showing its majestic, towering, and magnificent appearance.

Under the eaves, stairs, corridors, beauty rests, windows, and beside sculptures, there are many good shooting spots for portraits.

At the entrance of the Jiu Jin Hall, there are several places to rent Tujia ethnic costumes, with a wide selection and affordable prices. For only 20 yuan per hour, you can experience the traditional life of the Tujia people in the early years.

Other scenic spots in the scenic area are also worth seeing, such as Tusi City Gate Tower, Wind and Rain Bridge, Linjun Temple, Tusi City Wall, etc.

Opening hours: 8:00 – 18:30.

**The Second Stop: Enshi Grand Canyon**
Enshi Grand Canyon, which is hailed by experts as being on a par with the Grand Canyon in the United States, is located at 30 degrees north latitude and is at the junction of Hunan, Chongqing and Hubei provinces. It is the most beautiful section of the Qingjiang River Basin.

Enshi Grand Canyon has opened two core scenic areas, Seven Star Stronghold and Yunlong Ground Crack. Geological landscapes such as tiankengs, ground cracks, precipices, peak clusters, rock pillar groups, karst caves and underground rivers are all available. It is known as a “natural museum of karst landforms”.

The mysterious and precipitous Enshi Grand Canyon has five wonders: white clouds rising from the Qingjiang River, peak clusters surrounding precipices, sky bridges connecting cave groups, underground rivers connecting waterfalls, and tiankengs matching ground cracks.

The tour guide told us that it would take five or six hours to walk around the entire Grand Canyon scenic area without taking photos. If we want to take the four# Suobuya Stone Forest: A Geological Wonder in Enshi

## Suobuya Stone Forest: A World Geological Wonder
At the third stop in Enshi, we come to Suobuya Stone Forest, known as ‘hundred million-year-old undersea stone forest, world geological wonder’. Layer cake? Napoleon? Winding and stacked layer upon layer. This undersea world from the Ordovician period, with its highly composed pictures, stunned me at the first sight. Suobuya Stone Forest is so beautiful!

### About Suobuya Stone Forest
Suobuya Stone Forest is known as the world’s first Ordovician stone forest. It is located in Taiyanghe Township, Enshi City, with a total area of 21 square kilometers. The whole stone forest looks like a huge gourd. Surrounded by green screens, peaks compete for beauty.

### Scenic Areas
Suobuya Stone Forest has more than 100 classic natural landscapes in total. The opened scenic areas are Qinglong Temple, Lianhua Stockaded Village, Mozigou, and Jiulonghui. Each scenic area has its own characteristics. The unique ‘dissolved patterns’ and ‘crowned’ landscapes in the scenic area are highlights. Narrow secret realms and fossil relics can be seen everywhere. It can be called an ancient geological museum.

### Geological Significance
Contrary to my initial expectations, the stone material of the stone forest is extremely hard and sharp, dark and shiny after the rain. Touching the smooth and deeply sunken grooves, one can feel the imprints of time carved into the stone. According to research by Sun Yat-sen University and China University of Geosciences, it has been determined that the Suobuya Stone Forest was formed during the Ordovician period about 460 million years ago. This undersea maze, uplifted by crustal movements over millions of years, can truly be described as enchantingly beautiful.

## Photography Tips
Here are some photography tips for you: Due to the large light contrast in the canyons, it is advisable to expose based on the bright areas and brighten the dark areas in post-processing. Otherwise, overexposure in the highlights is difficult to recover, making the picture unattractive. Additionally, when shooting in such narrow spaces, it is recommended to use an ultra-wide-angle lens to create a stretched perspective, making the picture look wider and more visually impactful.

### Updated Opening Hours
– **Summer:** May 1st – October 31st from 08:00 to 18:00.
– **Winter:** November 1st – April 30th of the following year from 08:30 to 17:00.

## Culinary Delights in Enshi
Enshi is also a place where gourmet food abounds. Let me briefly introduce you to the two luxurious meals we had in a day.

### Nuzhai Scenic Area Restaurant
The first meal was at the Nuzhai Scenic Area Restaurant in Enshi Grand Canyon Scenic Area. The meal, made from natural ingredients from local farmers around the scenic area, was truly enjoyable. I must commend the small river fish soup pot in photo five, the pasta circles in photo eleven, and the small potatoes in photo twelve. You can taste the combination of nature and the Tujia ethnic group, with a full table of relatively strong flavors that are very satisfying to eat.

### Tujia-style Hanging Pot Feast
How can you come to Enshi without having a Tujia-style hanging pot feast? Haha, it’s arranged! The dinner was a grand feast featuring the Tujia-style ‘paotang’ as the main dish. ‘Paotang’ is essentially the Tujia version of a pork hotpot, mainly composed of various pork offal, paired with characteristic mushrooms and a full table of green vegetables and tofu, forming a luxurious lineup. Carried into the bamboo house by two young Tujia men on a pole and hung on a steel hook, everyone sat around, raised the rice wine, and ate and drank heartily, full of the bold characteristics of ethnic minorities.

### Additional Must-Try Dishes
I also have a particular fondness for the cured pig’s trotter pot on this table. The fresh and mellow flavor of the cured meat and the chewy texture of the skin are must-order dishes for me in Enshi, in addition to the equally famous ‘he zha’. Various fresh mushrooms, water shield, and tofu are cooked together in the pot, emitting a fragrant oil aroma and a lively heat. In the paotang, you must also dip some fresh blood tofu and high mountain pork, accompanied by soft and elastic ‘baba’ and tough dried tofu, and finally end with a bowl of oil tea, which can be called perfect.

### Business Hours
10:30 – 23:00.

### Detailed Address for Dining
Building 4, B1 Floor, No. 106, Aoshan Century City, Jin Gui Avenue, Enshi City, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province.

## Enshi’s Daughter Town: A Cultural Immersion
Step into Enshi’s Daughter Town, indulge in the traditional ‘sui bowl wine’, and listen to the local Tujia tunes | Experience the Tujia ethnic culture up close. To truly immerse yourself in the Tujia ethnic culture, a visit to Enshi’s Daughter Town is a must. Here, you can find a complete display of intangible cultural heritage, Tujia specialty cuisine, and folk customs, all in one place.Ba Ren Hall is the first stop to experience Daughter Town. It is also a large restaurant and reputed to be the birthplace of the ‘sui bowl wine’. Watching a lively Tujia folk dance and performance, drinking a bowl of ‘sui bowl wine’, and enjoying a full table of Tujia dishes are experiences not to be missed. At Ba Ren Hall, the ‘sui bowl wine’ costs one yuan per bowl. After drinking, you smash the bowl, which is incredibly stress-relieving. The sound of bowls smashing continuously from the adjacent tables fills the air, with the floor littered with shattered pieces, and everyone is in high spirits, their faces flushed with excitement!

Enshi’s specialty dishes such as mixed residue, highland mini potatoes, various fragrant cured meats and hams, and a variety of spicy bean curd, sausages, and jelly noodles offer a range of flavors that dance and jump in your mouth like musical notes, and the tastes are truly delightful. Tujia girls dressed in vibrant ethnic costumes sing and dance, creating an exceptionally grand spectacle. The atmosphere reaches its peak as everyone toasts, drinks, and smashes their bowls, with the sound of flowing water from the mountains echoing through the air, making the scene extremely lively.

After dinner and drinks, stroll around Daughter Town. Ancient-style buildings and Tujia stilted buildings are combined to maximize the representation of Tujia folk customs. The streets, laid out in a grid pattern along the mountain contours and following the water flow, are paved with grey angular pebbles. Although it is a newly built ancient-style town, the experience is still quite enjoyable.

We also enjoyed a ‘huotang song’ gathering at the Tujia Folk Museum. Dressed-up villagers played various instruments and sang beautiful Tujia folk songs. This is a very precious part of the Tujia’s intangible cultural heritage.

To summarize the main attractions of Daughter Town for your reference: Daughter Town Snack Street gathers specialty snacks from eight counties and cities of Enshi Prefecture as well as specialty cuisines from all over the country, such as Enshi fritters, Tujia corn cakes, Enshi bean skin, Jianshi pancakes, baked potatoes, steamed cakes, Chengdu spicy chicken, Shaanxi stuffed pancakes, and Changsha stinky tofu. Daughter Town Grand Theater is the first indoor live-action performance in the country and also the permanent venue for Enshi’s most famous Tujia folk match-making event – the Daughter’s Meeting. The Tujia Folk Museum is open to the public for free and hosts over 30 folk artists who perform arts year-round. There are also traditional Tujia crafts such as making sticky rice cakes, bean skin, and peach cakes displayed throughout the process. Visitors can not only learn about these crafts but also purchase and taste them.

Enshi Daughter Town is an open-style ancient town without admission fees and operates around the clock. Detailed address: No. 41, Ma’anshan Road, Enshi City, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.

Fifth stop, witness Jianshi. The Enshi Geocentric Valley carved by China’s first ancient river. The Enshi Geocentric Valley features extremely clear water, extremely strange stones, and extremely deep valleys. This is a place that is much more beautiful to explore than to photograph.

The Enshi Geocentric Valley is named after its heart-shaped water-eroded cave entrance. It is also located at 1520 kilometers on National Highway G318. In short, it is full of love! Aside from these gimmicks, looking at the twisted rocks ravaged by the forces of the earth, the smooth gullies and the jade-like clear streams that have been washed and baptized by water for thousands of years, every detail shows the miraculous power of nature. If you carefully choose the shooting location, you can still capture many beautiful pictures…

Here is the origin site known as the world’s first ancient human, one of the birthplaces of the Ba people in China, and also a gathering area of Tujia people in China.

Here is China’s first ancient river, the Shimen River. The valley mountains are steep and are forcefully carved out from a hundred-meter-high cliff. The water quality is extremely clear and is a rare masterpiece of alpine karst valley landscapes in the world.

Here is also the first ancient road and ancient bridge of Ba and Chu. The smooth flagstone road and each step are all ‘cultural relics’, traversing through thousands of years and reaching immortality!

Here is also the Shimen Pass known as the ‘best strategic pass in Shinan’. The landscape is precipitous and beautiful, and it is an important node connecting tourist attractions in Chongqing and Yichang.

Here is a recommended optimal tourist route for everyone: Purchase tickets at the tourist center – take the scenic shuttle bus – entrance to the

**Cliff House: A Hotel on the Edge**

By the way, I would also like to recommend the ‘Cliff House’, a hotel truly built on the cliff edge. Located next to the tourist center and glass bridge of the Geocentric Valley, it stands on a cliff with a vertical height of 356 meters. The hotel offers a perspective surrounding the gorge on three sides and a 270-degree beautiful view. With a total of twenty-six guest rooms, all are independent building view rooms, providing an amazing visual effect. Without further ado, stay for a night before leaving, hahaha.

**Hefeng Ping**Ella’s Joyful Adventure at Pengjia Fort and Tenglong Cave**

**Ella’s Wanderlust and Photography**

Our beloved Ella wandered through the scenic area, stopping and taking photos at every turn, filled with joy. Her enthusiasm was contagious, capturing the essence of each moment.

**Delicious Meal at Pengjia Fort**

The meal at Pengjia Fort is also delicious, providing a much-needed energy boost after a long walk. Particularly impressive are the fluffy potato shreds in photo 4 and the warm corn and pork rib soup in photo 2, as well as the spicy pepper dish in photo 6 – all truly delicious.

**Pengjia Fort Scenic Area Details**

– **Entrance Fee:** 65 yuan
– **Transportation:** Visitors must transfer to a scenic shuttle bus at the main gate’s visitor center to arrive.
– **Opening Hours:** Monday to Friday 08:30-17:00, Saturday to Sunday 08:30-17:30
– **Address:** Southwestern part of Shadaogou Town, Xuan’en County, Enshi, Hubei

**Tenglong Cave: A Colossal Natural Wonder**

Driving westward, we arrive at Tenglong Cave in Lichuan, Enshi. This is truly the largest karst cave I have ever seen. An entire mountain is the entrance to the cave, standing 72 meters high and 64 meters wide. The open space can accommodate 15 trucks side by side and can hold a 20-story building. Helicopters can even hover freely at the cave entrance. It is said that among the nearly 400 developed tourist caves in China, Tenglong Cave is indeed the most grand in scale.

**Must-See Waterfall at Tenglong Cave**

The waterfall at the entrance of Tenglong Cave is a must-see and a must-photograph spot. The Qingjiang River plunges into the water cave entrance of Tenglong Cave with a drop of more than 40 meters, the water falling in three layers, with rolling foam and a thunderous sound, making it almost as impressive as the Hukou Waterfall of the Yellow River.

**Impressive Scale and Beauty of Tenglong Cave**

This is a colossal cave with an entrance wide enough for airplanes, a cave with mountains inside (253 meters high), and an enormous deep cave that can accommodate 10 million people at once. It has also been rated as one of the top six most beautiful tourist caves in China by the ‘China National Geographic Magazine’.

**Complex Structure and Unique Experiences**

With a depth of about 60 kilometers, Tenglong Cave features mountains within the cave, caves within the mountains, water caves and dry caves interconnected, and main caves and side caves interwoven, creating a complex structure that is truly awe-inspiring!

Moreover, inside Tenglong Cave, we unexpectedly took a sightseeing train to watch two large-scale live performances, both of which are the only cave-based large-scale live performances in the country, offering a truly new travel experience, which is quite interesting.

**Cultural and Technological Wonders**

One performance is an emotional song and dance show depicting the folk legends of the Tujia people, and it is also the only original ecological cave theater in China. Mobile stilted buildings, covered bridges, dragon boats in the water, lifting stages, and digital lighting blend nature with culture, antiquity with modernity.

图片描述

The large-scale scene song and dance ‘Beautiful Yishui River’ with more than 100 actors’ passionate performances is set against Tujia culture. It allows viewers to walk into Tujia life as if they were on the scene. Appreciating such a large-scale performance in a cave is also an unprecedented new experience.

Another is the dreamy laser show, which is currently the only comprehensive cave laser show in the country. It adopts the most advanced technologies at home and abroad. Combined with elaborately choreographed songs and dances, it integrates multiple elements such as lasers, dome screens, water shows, fountains, flames, and rime pines, and is staged with great vigor.

**Address for Tenglong Cave**

– **Detailed Address:** No. 1 Tenglong Avenue, Lichuan City, Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.

**Chaibuxi Grand Canyon: A Miniature Zhangjiajie**

The Chaibuxi Grand Canyon natural scenic area is located in the east of Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County. It is connected to ‘Wulingyuan’ in the south and ‘Qingshui River’ in the north. It belongs to the Wuling Mountains like Zhangjiajie.

‘Bauli secluded canyon Chaibuxi, three thousand magnificent peaks in a fairyland’. It is known as ‘a unique sight in central China’. It covers an area of 80 kilometers in circumference. A clear stream runs through the entire canyon. It is divided intoThe most thrilling in the scenic area are the soaring Azure Ladder and the ropeway with a height difference of 793 meters. We took this ropeway. We really have to praise it. There is a section that is like a vertical drop. The angle made the friends scream in fear. It is really exciting.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 08:30 – 17:00. Saturday to Sunday 08:00 – 17:30.

A place gathering great beauty. Yichang Three Gorges Family | National geological park by the Yangtze River.

Mountains have their majesty, waters have their gracefulness, and people have their beauty. A place gathering great beauty is the Three Gorges Family. Friends all say that it is extraordinarily beautiful beyond imagination. On one side is the majestic Yangtze River, and on the other side is the elegant charm of a clear stream. The folk songs of Tujia girls float all over the valley. It is a must-visit choice for traveling in Yichang. Yes, it is really good!

The beauty of Shipai in the Three Gorges Family lies in ‘rapid bays, strange stones, secluded valleys, unique caves, and sweet springs’.

Poets of all dynasties such as Li Bai, Ouyang Xiu, and Lu You have used their spiritual pens to write about the Three Gorges Family, or the sound of oars and the shadows of sails, or the toad’s sweet spring, or the green mountains and flying waterfalls, or the beautiful peaks and strange stones…

The Three Gorges are nestled against the mountains and beside the water, with picturesque scenery. Traditional hanging houses of the Three Gorges are dotted among the landscape, with ancient sailing boats and sampans quietly moored in front of the houses. Young girls by the stream use wooden mallets to wash clothes, and fishermen leisurely cast their nets on the river.

Upon entering the hanging houses by the river, local girls sing and dance, with red embroidered balls in their hands that seem to float and fall.

The water’s edge homes | At the confluence of Longjin Stream and the Yangtze River, several ancient sailing boats stand against the wind, with small fishing boats casting their nets, and the Initial Gorge Pavilion is exquisite and unique. On the side near the stream, a dam has been built, raising the clear waters of Longjin Stream by 1-2 meters. The water is green, the trees are lush, and the mottled and weathered Longjin Bridge spans across it. Several small fishing boats are quietly moored under the bridge. ‘The spring waves under Longjin Bridge are green, and the startled swan reflects its image,’ is like a dream, making people intoxicated and entranced.

Streamside homes | Nestled against the mountains and beside the water, half on land, half in water, surrounded by mountains, accompanied by green hills, sloping grass and trees, misty rain, as if in a poem or a painting.

Mountain homes | The ‘stilt houses’ of the mountain dwellers are called ‘pile-dwellings’ by modern architects. The terrain in the Three Gorges area is rugged, with houses built along the mountain contours, wooden structures, and surrounded by bamboo and banana clusters in front and behind the houses.

Opening hours: March 1st – October 31st 08:00-17:30, November 1st – February 28th of the following year 08:30-17:30

Because here, we enjoy the sunshine, completely relax, stop, and sort out the many beautiful experiences we have had in Hubei over these days.

Recall | Enshi, the last secret land in central China, ‘China’s most beautiful fairyland’ on the American CNN list. This hidden beauty must be known to more people. Enshi’s natural scenery, ethnic customs, colorful culture, and excellent food and music are definitely places to go in life.

Looking back on Yichang, located in central China at the boundary between the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It is known as the ‘gateway to the Three Gorges’ and the ‘throat of Sichuan and Hubei’. Yichang is the starting point of the Three Gorges. The Three Gorges Dam and Gezhouba Dam are both here. It is truly known as the ‘world capital of hydropower’. The hometown of Qu Yuan and the native place of Wang Zhaojun. One can deeply feel the external and internal beauty of Yichang. And in Hubei, in addition to Enshi and Yichang, there are many places we haven’t been to. It is all-encompassing and wonderful. The super metropolis Wuhan, the famous Taoist place Wudang Mountain, and many ancient cities where the thousand-year-old Ba and Chu cultures gather. All make me yearn for it. I will wait for more opportunities to come to Hubei and explore and discover more. This is not only the end but also a new beginning. Beautiful Hubei is charming. Wait for me to come again!
