Dongdu Yuan Scenic Area is the departure point where the Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen successfully embarked on his sixth voyage to Japan. The entire scenic area is divided into two parts: the East District, which houses temples and leisure areas, and the West District, which is the Jianzhen Memorial Hall area. The garden highlights water features, reflecting the pastoral scenery of the Jiangnan water towns. The main building within the garden, ‘Jianzhen’s Eastward Voyage Memorial Hall’, houses a bronze statue of Master Jianzhen, standing 2.06 meters tall and weighing 380 kilograms. Inside the hall, there are seven murals that document the arduous journey of Jianzhen’s sixth voyage to Japan and provide a brief introduction to his life as well as the route he took.
On the back wall of the main hall, six wooden carved book screens display excerpts from ‘The Biography of Jianzhen’s Expedition’, totaling 1342 characters, which recount Jianzhen’s sixth voyage to Japan. On both sides of the main hall, artifacts such as stone tools, pottery, and red-baked earth from the Neolithic sites of Lu Yuan Xujia Bay and Xuzhuang are exhibited. Additionally, materials, books, photographs, and souvenirs gifted by Japanese friends related to Jianzhen are on display. The opening hours are from 08:00 to 17:00 all year round.
