Donglin Temple is a famous temple in Jinshan District, Shanghai. It is located in Zhujing Town in the southwest of Shanghai. Its original name is Guanyintang and it was founded in 1308, the first year of Zhida in the Yuan Dynasty. Different from those simple ancient temples, Donglin Temple presents a magnificent momentum. Here, you can see one of the Guinness World Records of the Great World – the ‘tallest copper gate’ – the Thousand-Buddha Gate, the tallest indoor Thousand-Handed Avalokitesvara statue, and the unique outdoor Five Hundred Arhats Mountain in China. You can feel a different Buddhist atmosphere. Donglin Temple has had a long and prosperous incense for seven hundred years. However, it has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt due to wars and fires. Before a later reconstruction, only one main hall remained in the entire temple, but the incense still continued. In recent years, after a comprehensive reconstruction, the brand-new Donglin Temple was presented to people in 2007. At that time, the Qiming Dharma Assembly was held by eminent Buddhist monks such as Yicheng Master, the president of the Buddhist Association of China, to pray for the people. The prosperous incense has continued to this day. Today’s Donglin Temple has a unique architectural style. The main building of the temple is built against a tall artificial rockery building, forming a combination of mountain and temple. The entire temple is divided into Yuantong Hall, Mahavira Hall, Guanyin Pavilion, Shancai Pavilion, Buddha head statue, Thousand-Buddha Gate, bell tower, drum tower, Jinyuan Bridge, Five-Buddha Crown, Jinlianchi (Cloisonné Shancai Boy) and other scenic spots. To enter Donglin Temple, you need to pass through the Three Gates first. Combining the thought of Pure Land Sect, the Three Gates are unique and solemn in domestic Buddhist temples. Then you can see Jinlianchi. In the center of the pool is the domestic cloisonné Buddha statue ‘Shancai Boy’, which can be called ‘a unique sight of Donglin Temple’. There are also various Five Hundred Arhats and the ‘Thousand-Buddha Gate’ of Chinese Buddhism in the temple, which are all characteristics of Donglin Temple. The Lingyu Avalokitesvara enshrined in Donglin Temple is known as the ‘Three Spirits’ of Chinese Buddhism together with Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou and Lingshan Giant Buddha in Wuxi. In the Yuantong Treasure Hall is the ‘inner hall within the hall’ made of brass. Enshrined in the hall is a Yuan Dynasty ‘Lingyu Avalokitesvara’ holy statue carved from a whole piece of Hetian jade weighing 1.8 tons from Xinjiang. The statue is solemn and can be called the treasure of the temple. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 16:30.
