Dongtan Wetland Park is located at the eastern end of Chongming Island, at the mouth of the Yangtze River, where the air is fresh and the boundless reeds cover the tidal flats. Walking on the wooden plank road is an enjoyment of being close to nature.
Dongtan is a great place to watch the sunrise, and during the autumn and winter seasons when migratory birds migrate, you can stand on the bird-watching platform in the park to observe the birds in the distance, either flying or resting, which adds a vivid natural pleasure. Dongtan Wetland Park is a necessary path for migratory birds in the Asia-Pacific region and also a wintering place for waterfowl.
A heron-watching platform is built in the center of the park, making it convenient to observe birds from a height. Upon entering Dongtan Wetland Park, you will sequentially pass through several major areas including the wetland landscape area, wetland habitat restoration area, waterfowl habitat, and rainwater collection area, where you can see vast reed beds and wetland lakes. In spring and summer, you can see various flowers and plants in the grass, but it is difficult to see migratory birds.
You can explore the park on foot, or take an electric cart, rent a bicycle, or take a boat tour, which can be boarded from the visitor center to the depths of the park. The wetland habitat restoration area and waterfowl habitat in the park offer hand-rowing boat activities, and there are also barbecues, camping, and fishing activities. The visitor center and the park’s Fragrant Grassland and Sea-Viewing Tower have restaurants that provide Chinese set meals and Western pastries.
Opening hours are all year round Tuesday-Sunday 08:30-17:00; all year round Monday closed; New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day 08:30-17:00.
