Dufeng Academy, one of the four major academies in Jinyun, is located within the Niweng Cave scenic spot, at the foot of Haoshan Mountain, facing Haoxi (Lianxi) River. It is a memorial site where the Song Dynasty Neo-Confucianist Zhu Xi gave lectures. The architectural style of Dufeng Academy belongs to the late Qing Dynasty, covering an area of 1200 square meters. The core part consists of three sections with three rooms each, flanked by twenty side rooms on both sides, symmetrically arranged from north to south, connected by arched round doors and small doors. The garden, courtyard, and veranda are harmoniously integrated. The academy boasts famous flowers and trees such as rosewood, ginkgo, osmanthus, camellia, pine, and banana. The exhibition inside focuses on commemorating Zhu Xi, displaying the natural scenery, cultural history, literary and artistic works of Xiandu, as well as images of Xiandu dinosaur fossils, for visitors to appreciate and savor. Background knowledge: In the Yuan Dynasty book ‘Xiandu Zhi’ and others, it is recorded that Dufeng Academy is to the west of Lianjin Creek, facing Dufeng. In the Song Dynasty, during the Chunxi year of the Renyin period (1182), Zhu Xi, known as Huian, was waiting for imperial orders after submitting a memorial to censure the Taizhou governor (Tang Zhongyou). On August 22, he visited Jinyun County and wandered around Xiandu Mountain, where he said: ‘Here I hide and cultivate.’ At the same time, he wrote a seven-character quatrain ‘Following the Rhyme of Xu’s Mountain Dwelling’: ‘A solitary cloud emerging from the cave is at ease, not hindered by the affairs of the king. Unfastening the saddle and forgetting to return, the green stream and tall bamboo are like my old mountain.’ After Zhu Xi left, his students built a study hall at Xiandu Rock. In the third year of Baoqing (1228), at the suggestion of Ye Si Chang, a scholar from Qingtian, people built a ceremonial hall opposite Dinghu Peak at Futiger Rock as a place for lectures, in memory of him. In the year of Xian Chun Dingmao (1267), Qian Yun, a scholar from Jinyun and Minister of Revenue, allocated funds to expand it and named it Dufeng Academy. In the twelfth year of Tongzhi (1873), He Nai Rong, the county magistrate of Jinyun, rebuilt it at the foot of Haoshan Mountain, where ‘Mr. Huian rested here.’ The entire text is open all year round from 08:00 to 17:00.
