The Dunhuang Contemporary Art Museum draws its essence from Dunhuang culture, presenting the rich and diverse world of human art and thought through academic research, exhibition, collection, publication, education, digital transformation, and public projects in contemporary art. It strives to explore the historical logic of modern Chinese art and the contemporary translation of traditional culture within the intellectual context that connects the classical and the modern.

With an open perspective, the museum aims to establish an international art practice and theoretical research platform based in China. Dunhuang is not a static concept but a dynamic process of constant growth and change. It encapsulates culture, art, politics, history, customs, beliefs, nature, and different civilizations, reflecting all aspects of human life as a mirror of the world. The museum takes Dunhuang as a metaphor and its cultural and artistic heritage as the foundation, hoping to create a visual field for dialogue between art and contemporary life while inheriting the Eastern essence of Chinese culture.

Relying on local resources and resident projects in Dunhuang, the museum also aims to become a portal connecting the Dunhuang site with urban art spaces, breaking down barriers between regions, past and present, and knowledge. It stands on tradition while reflecting on the contemporary, forming an art practice and research platform that connects Shanghai, Dunhuang, and the global community.
