The art museum takes Dunhuang culture as its gene. Through activities such as academic research, exhibition, collection, publication, education, digital transformation and public projects of contemporary art, it presents the rich and diverse artistic and ideological world of humanity. It also attempts to explore the historical logic of modern Chinese art and the contemporary translation of traditional culture in the knowledge context connecting classic and modern.

With an open vision, it establishes an international art practice and theoretical research platform with China as the venue. Dunhuang is not a static concept but is in a dynamic process of continuous growth and change. Dunhuang comprehensively condenses all aspects of human life such as culture, art, politics, history, customs, beliefs, nature, and even different civilizations. In this regard, Dunhuang is a mirror reflecting the living world.

The art museum takes Dunhuang as an image and Dunhuang culture and art as the cornerstone. It hopes to create a visual field for dialogue between art and contemporary life on the basis of inheriting the oriental background color of Chinese culture. Relying on local resources and resident projects in Dunhuang, the art museum also aims to become a port connecting the Dunhuang site and urban art spaces, breaking the boundaries between regions, ancient and modern, and knowledge.

Based on tradition and looking at the contemporary, it forms an art practice and research platform that links Shanghai, Dunhuang, and the world.
