Located to the east of Shugang in Yangzhou (in Jiangdu Shuanggou) stands the head of the mountain, known as DunTou. At the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, the eminent monk Master Yinzhi traveled here and deemed the place auspicious. He then dedicated himself to cultivating his mind and spreading the Dharma, and together with the local people, they built a temple. A series of structures such as the mountain gate, Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Mahavira Hall, Scripture Repository, dining hall, and guest hall were erected, attracting a vast number of devotees. During Emperor Qianlong’s southern tour of the Qing Dynasty, he personally visited and graciously inscribed a plaque for the temple, ‘DunTou Ancient Temple’. The temple underwent renovations during the Tongzhi and Guangxu reigns. During the Anti-Japanese War, the temple’s halls, chambers, and facilities were destroyed. After the reform and opening up, with the implementation of the Party’s religious policies and the care and support of leaders at all levels in Yangzhou and Jiangdu, DunTou Ancient Temple began to be restored and rebuilt by the end of 2002. Structures such as the mountain gate, Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Hall of the Three Saints, Hall of Earth Store, Hall of Guanyin, dining hall, and monks’ quarters were constructed, reviving the temple’s former glory. The temple is open all year round from 7:00 to 19:00.
