Discover a hidden gem in Shanghai where clear waters meet blue skies, and the tranquility of swaying tree shadows creates a leisurely island atmosphere. This is the Shanghai Sun Island Resort, a place of internet-famous spots and natural beauty. Formerly known as Mao Island, Sun Island has a history that resembles a shuttle, with rivers that flow ceaselessly, weaving a tapestry of history and the formation of civilization.
Located near the ancient town of Zhujiajiao, the Shanghai Sun Island Resort is the closest parent-child resort hotel to downtown Shanghai. The island boasts a rich history, with traces of human life dating back to the Western Zhou Dynasty in China, making it a historically significant destination.
In May, the island comes alive with lush vegetation, green willows, and grass that spreads everywhere, exuding the fragrance of April and the charm of an idyllic retreat.
**Transportation:**
– **Self-driving/bus route:** Our journey from downtown Shanghai to Sun Island Resort was via the Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway, which took approximately an hour and was very convenient.
– **Public Transportation:** If you prefer not to drive, you can take Line 17 from Zhujiajiao Town and then either take a taxi or transfer to a bus to reach the resort.
**Accommodation:**
The check-in lobby and villa area of Sun Island are separate. After completing the check-in procedures, you can either drive or take a shuttle bus to your room within the island, offering a unique and convenient experience.
This weekend getaway is perfect for families seeking a blend of history, nature, and relaxation. With its serene environment and family-friendly activities, the Shanghai Sun Island Resort is an ideal destination for your next escape. The villa area is large, with lush vegetation and adjacent to the Mao River. Walking through it gives a feeling of a secluded path. We chose the club parent-child room next to the river. Upon arrival, we found it to be very spacious. The soft furnishings in the room are all cartoon themes that children love. As soon as you enter, you can see a large chessboard carpet. Next to it are several boxes of Lego toys, children’s tents, and cartoon dolls. It is no wonder that it is a 0-complaint parent-child hotel in Shanghai. The room is equipped with a capsule coffee machine and free soft drinks. It also gives a bottle of red wine produced by the hotel’s brother brand, which feels very cost-effective. The room is designed with a parent-child bed, a double bed + a child’s bed. The bathroom has a separate bathtub, children’s toothbrush and toothpaste, and a child’s toilet seat cover, which is very thoughtful.
Pet Paradise: After putting away the luggage, we went straight to the pet paradise with Summer (my silly dog). Before arriving at the place, we saw various parents with dogs. Summer was very excited. The pet paradise is divided into indoor and outdoor areas. Indoors, dogs can have afternoon tea, play on climbing frames, and play with ocean balls. Outdoors, there is a huge lawn for dogs to run around. Dogs can also swim in a professional pet shallow water pool. It is worth mentioning that Sun Island has pet boarding and pet training services. Equipped with professional dog trainers, they can help dogs correct bad habits and learn some skills.Summer was boarded here for an afternoon. The little guy was timid and kept barking. The staff were very patient, gave him biscuits and yogurt, and were very nice. After leaving the pet paradise, we took our daughter to ride the mermaid train. The train is composed of blue and white colors, with colorful paintings on both sides of the car, full of childlike innocence. The train stops at three stations throughout the journey, the hotel lobby, the mermaid dock, and the small green space. Tickets can be used for the whole day, and you can enjoy the scenery of the island along the way, which is very refreshing.
Play/Entertainment: I heard before coming that the equestrian club of Shanghai Sun Island is very famous. After breakfast on the second day, I took my daughter to go horse riding. At first, my daughter was a bit afraid when she saw the big horses. Later, the staff brought a small pony for her to ride, and she immediately fell in love with it. Protective gear will be worn before mounting the horse. The staff will lead the horse throughout the process, so there is no danger. My baby had a great time. Seeing that there are many children learning professional equestrian skills at the racecourse, it is very handsome. There are many places suitable for children to play on the island. We chose to go to the Ingenuity Pavilion to do handicrafts first. There are instructors and toolkits. Just follow the instructions. We chose a piece of soft pottery and a leather bag, and finally completed them all successfully! In May, the weather is already relatively hot.Gathering at Mermaid Wharf, many people enjoy the popularity of water activities. A family of three, for instance, finds great pleasure in renting a water bicycle, which is a delightful experience.
For dinner on their first day, the family indulges in a small hot pot. Each person has their own pot, and the set meal is comprehensive, including vegetables, meat, fish, and shellfish. The pork bone soup is thickly boiled, and the vegetables are said to be organic, grown on the island itself. These vegetables are notably crispy and, when paired with meat and seafood, provide a satisfying meal. Should one desire more, additional staple food is available without limit.
On the second day, breakfast is a highlight at the hotel’s buffet restaurant. The quality is high, especially for a hotel, with a mix of Chinese and Western cuisines. The noodles prepared in the open kitchen are particularly delicious, and the homemade soy milk and yogurt are exceptional. For those preferring Western fare, there are salads and bread options. The family is thoroughly satisfied with their breakfast.
Lunch on the first day is at the Waterfall Western Restaurant, located on the first floor of the front hall. After a hearty morning meal, the family is not very hungry. They order a special children’s meal for their daughter, which includes child-friendly tableware and freshly made hamburgers and juices, all of which are well-received. The parents sample the new dirty milk, a dessert crafted with fresh milk and fruits, which is a delightful treat for the cool early summer.
Upon departing from Sun Island Resort Hotel, the family discovers a landmark sculpture of Sun Island—a chubby mermaid, a fitting symbol of their enjoyable stay.Haha, it is said that the conception is inspired by Yang Guifei, a beauty in ancient China.
