Chen Wudi’s Imperial Palace is located in Xiaruo Temple Township, Changxing County. It was originally the former residence of Chen Baxian. Chen Baxian is the founding emperor of the Chen Dynasty and is historically known as Emperor Wu of Chen. According to records, ‘Due to the prosperous incense of Chen’s imperial palace, in the first year of Chen Guangda in the Southern Dynasties (567), it was ordered to be established as Tianju Temple; in the second year of Zhiningping in the Song Dynasty (1065), it was changed to Guanghui Teaching Temple; in the 24th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty (1391), it was established as a monastery, commonly known as Xiaruo Temple. There is an ancient well inside Chen Wudi’s Imperial Palace. According to historical records, when Chen Baxian was born, the well spring boiled. His family drew water to bathe him. Later generations called this well the ‘Holy Well’, also known as the ‘Chen Well’. The Holy Well has a stone-built well wall, about 15 meters deep and 1.5 meters in diameter. The water surface is level with the ground. The well water is clear and never dries up all year round. In 1993, a new Holy Well Pavilion was built and a Holy Well stele was erected to protect the Holy Well. On August 15, 1994, the county government approved the reconstruction of Chen Baxian’s imperial palace in Xiaruo Temple. Now, the plaque of Chen Wudi’s Imperial Palace with the words ‘Chen Wudi’s Imperial Palace’ is handwritten by Chen Lifu. Inside the palace, there is a statue of Chen Baxian standing upright. On the west side are murals depicting Chen Baxian’s life experiences. On the back of the statue is written ‘The personal life of Chen Baxian, the first emperor of the Chen Dynasty.’ The entire palace is magnificent with thick bricks and coiled hair buns, coiled dragons and upturned corners. On the palace roof, two dragons are playing with a pearl. On the door, there are flying dragons and dancing phoenixes. The ancient bricks pave the ground, making it rich and solemn.
